bently nevada proximity probe working principle

‌ The working principle of the Bentley Nevada Proximity detector ‌ is based on electromagnetic induction and eddy current effects. The approach detector uses a coil powered by high frequency alternating current, which generates a magnetic field that induces eddy currents in the metal shaft, which in turn affects the impedance of the coil, thus measuring the distance between the probe and the metal shaft ‌.

When the metal shaft is close to the sensor coil, the magnetic coupling between the shaft and coil is enhanced, resulting in an increase in eddy currents, which in turn affects the impedance of the coil. This change is converted into a voltage signal, which allows the distance between the probe and the metal shaft to be measured. In Bentley Nevada’s design, the oscillator circuit that provides excitation of the sensor coil is called the proximity module. This module drives the sensor coil through a coaxial cable, and the output voltage is directly related to the proximity of the probe tip to the metal shaft ‌.
