How Circuit Breakers Work?
The working principle of the circuit breaker is based on the combined action of electromagnetic force and spring force. When the circuit is working normally, the circuit breaker is in a closed state and the current passes through the contacts of the circuit breaker. When the circuit is short-circuited, overloaded or in other abnormal conditions, the protection device inside the circuit breaker will detect the abnormal current, trigger the tripping mechanism of the circuit breaker, and quickly cut off the power supply.
The tripping mechanism of the circuit breaker mainly includes electromagnetic trippers, thermal trippers and electronic trippers. The electromagnetic tripper mainly protects against short-circuit currents, the thermal tripper mainly protects against overload currents, and the electronic tripper can provide comprehensive protection according to the set protection parameters.
When a short circuit occurs in the circuit, the magnetic field generated by the large current overcomes the reaction spring, the tripper pulls the operating mechanism to operate, and the switch trips instantly. When the circuit is overloaded, the current becomes larger, the heat generation increases, and the bimetallic strip deforms to a certain extent to push the mechanism to operate.
In addition, the classification of circuit breakers can be divided according to their use environment and function.
According to the voltage level, circuit breakers are divided into high-voltage circuit breakers and low-voltage circuit breakers. High-voltage circuit breakers are used to break high-voltage and high-current circuits, while low-voltage circuit breakers are used in low-voltage power distribution systems and have functions such as overload, short circuit and undervoltage protection. According to the structural form, circuit breakers can be divided into frame type, plastic shell type and current limiting type.
